Manuscript Promissory Note for Fraudulent Land Sale in Clay County, Iowa, dated June 11, 1869. $2,500, Signed by J. Whitney of St. Louis, Missouri to William S. Alden, for a 6500 acre plot and dated June 11, 1869.

Measures approx. 4.25 x 8 inches, with five Twenty-Five Cent George Washington Stamps along edges.

Inscription to verso indicates that the note was paid by Mr. Whitney, with interest, only to discover that the land had already been sold twice (!):

“This note was paid to Samuel Rand at (?) / Iowa Jany 18, 1870 with Interest. I found out afterward / that the title to the land was not good and really had been / sold twice before, as all swamp land. I tried to get my money back from the man who deeded to me, W. S. Alden…”
